For Immediate Release
Avon Going Smoke Free on September 1
For more information, contact Tom Klein, Town Manager at 272-0948
(August 23, 2006) The Town of Avon becomes the first Town in Hendricks County to go smoke free on September 1.
Smoking will be banned in all enclosed workplaces except bars, retail tobacco stores and private clubs. Outdoor places of employment are also excluded.
Smoking is also prohibited within 50 feet from an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited to ensure that smoke does enter in to smoke free areas.
The Avon Town Hall and Park will become entirely smoke free.
All businesses must post signs at all entrances indicating that it is a smoking or non-smoking facility.
A person that violates the smoke free ordinance may be fined $50 and a person that owns, manages or operates a facility that qualifies as smoke free and fails to comply may be fined $100 for the first violation, $200 for a second violation within one year and $500 for each additional violation in one year.
The Ordinance was modeled after the Indiana Model Smoke Free Ordinance and was adopted after the Town Council held a work session to receive public input.
Enforcement may consist of citizen complaints and random inspections by Town staff. Staff members of the Hendricks County Health Department and Avon Fire Department are authorized to inspect for compliance during a mandated inspection by the Department.
