For the purposes of determining the Fire Protection Permit fee for building fire alarm systems, we are using Section 907.9 of the 2003 Indiana Fire Code for guidance.  It states "each floor shall be zoned separately and a zone shall not exceed 22,500 square feet.  The length of any zone shall not exceed 300 feet in any direction."

 

Example #1 

To calculate the permit fee for the installation of a fire alarm system in a two-story office building 80,000 square feet in area (40,000 sq. ft. per floor) you would follow these steps:

To calculate the permit fee for the installation of a fire alarm system in a single-story 80,000 sq. ft. big box retail facility follow these steps:

1. Number of floors = 1
2. Area per floor = 80,000 sq. ft.
3. Number of zones per floor (80,000/22,500) = 3.55(round up to the nearest whole number) = 4
4. Does any dimension of the fire alarm zones exceed 300 ft. in length?  If YES, divide the area into two separate zones.  If NO, proceed to the next step.
5. Number of floors x Number of zones per floor = 4 zones
6. $150 per zone x 4 zones = $600.
