The Avon Police Department was established in 1996. The department's jurisdiction encompasses over 250 lane miles and serves a population of approximately 20,000 residents. The police department is staffed with 28 merit officers, 3 reserve officers, and an administrative staff that includes an Administrative Assistant and Detective Aide. The Police Department is led by Chief Sean Stoops and Assistant Chief Brian Nugent.

Chief Stoops is one of the first six officers hired as an Avon Police Officer in 1997. He was promoted to Detective in 2000 and became the supervisor of the Investigations Division in 2004.  Chief Stoops supervised the Investigations Division for over 10 years while also serving as a crisis negotiator and a firearms instructor for the Department.  Chief Stoops is also a graduate of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Leadership Academy.  Stoops was appointed as the Chief of Police in April of 2014.  Prior to working for the Avon Police Department, Chief Stoops served in the United States Air Force for three years as well as the Indiana Air National Guard for four years. He has also worked for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Assistant Chief Brian Nugent began working for Avon in 2003.  During his time with the agency, Nugent worked as a uniform officer for 2 years, after which he was promoted to the rank of Detective from 2005 to 2014.  In 2014, Nugent was appointed to the position of Assistant Chief of Police.  Assistant Chief Nugent has served as a crisis negotiator, field training officer, drug recognition expert, public information officer, and is a graduate of Leadership Hendricks County 2015 as well as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Leadership Academy in 2016.  Prior to working for the Avon Police Department, Assistant Chief Nugent served as an officer with the Tell City, Indiana Police Department.  Assistant Chief Nugent is also a graduate of Vincennes University as well as the University of Evansville where he obtained his bachelor's degree in criminal justice and sociology.
